In an effort to encourage UK timber importers to increase their purchases of legal and sustainable timber from Indonesia, a delegation from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia visited a number of manufacturers across the country.

With FLEGT and legal and sustainable wood products high on their agenda – and led by Indonesian Ambassador to the UK, HE Desra Percaya – the delegation visited James Latham, Hanson Plywood, Lambson Building Products and the Willerby caravan manufacturer.

During his visit, the Ambassador reiterated his commitment to further strengthen the mutually beneficial partnership between Indonesia and the UK. “We need to seize the momentum of the UK-Indonesia FLEGT VPA implementation by looking for creative ways to increase the sustainability of the supply of legal and sustainable timber products from Indonesia and ensure that these high quality timbers remain the essential part of supply to British industry. chain.”

As part of their trip, the delegation enjoyed a tour of the Hanson Plywood warehouse where they inspected Indonesian wood products.

“Cooperation should be intensified to add more value to Indonesia’s FLEGT-certified timber products and to replicate a similar mechanism with other forest and agricultural products. A holistic approach involving all relevant stakeholders is essential. Trade and industry associations, as well as consumers and NGOs, play a vital role in shaping the outlook and demand, while the governments and parliaments of both countries could provide regulatory and incentive support to the market, such as indicated in the UK-Indonesia FLEGT-VPA.

Pacific Rim Wood, which supplies a number of wood products to these manufacturers, helped arrange the visit. Managing Director Shaun Hannan said, “It was an honor to host the visit, which has already been hailed as a major success in helping to raise awareness of Indonesian FLEGT-licensed timber products and encourage importers and British stakeholders to increase their purchases. of legal and sustainable wood products from Indonesia.
