SFC Begins Retailer Reviews for 2021 Wood Furniture Dashboard

For its 2021 Wood Furniture Scorecard, the Sustainable Furnishings Council (SFC) begins the process of evaluating industry retailers, to assess their commitments to sustainable wood sourcing practices.

By early fall, SFC, in conjunction with the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), will review public domain documentation to determine whether the retailer’s declared timber sourcing policy explicitly avoids deforestation risks. and whether the policy is being implemented effectively.

For resellers with weak evidence of a sustainable wood sourcing commitment, SFC is offering free advice to improve practices by September 1.

Retailers looking for an assessment can check out this month’s webinar taped by the CFS titled Forest Health and Your Wood Choices by visiting the organization’s YouTube channel. Additional information is available on the Wood Furniture Dashboard tab of their website.

More than 100 retailers of all sizes are expected to be included in the Wood Furniture Scorecard assessment this year, according to SFC Executive Director Susan Inglis.

“Our industry’s supply chains are complex,” says Inglis. “Retailers may not know when illegally logged timber is arriving in stores, which is why implementing a strong sourcing policy is key to reducing risk. “

“Forest systems around the world are being compromised due to harvest rates and the impact of global warming,” she adds. “Ironically, healthy forests are the fastest way we have to fight climate change. “

In October, eligible stores will receive one of three designations, including Best Score, Best Score and Honorable Mention. Top-rated companies receive a badge to use for marketing purposes, signaling consumers and industry professionals their commitment to sustainable wood practices.

The Wood Furniture Scorecard program was launched in 2018. In 2020, those with the highest score with at least 18 out of a total of 31 points included mebl Furniture, Simbly, Cisco Home, Williams-Sonoma Group, Crate and Barrel, re .dwell and Vermont Woods Studio. Mass retailers Target and IKEA North America are among the larger companies named on last year’s list.

The Wood Furniture Scorecard rates retailers regardless of their SFC membership status.
